The text is well written and interesting enough to sit and read, or, if you prefer, you can just leaf through admiring the luxurious photos. And if you're too far away from London to visit Kew, this book may well be the next best thing.
About the Author
Allen Paterson was from 1973 to 1981 Curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden and from 1981 to 1993 Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Ontario. He is a member of the Council of the Royal Horticultural Society, and a Distinguished Advisor to the Board of Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He lives in Dumfriesshire in Scotland.

Thorough and well-researched history

A superbly illustrated book published in 2008 to celebrate Kew's 250th anniversary. This covers not only the 300 acre garden outside London which most people know, but also Kew's other garden, Wakehurst Place in Sussex. A must for garden lovers and/or those who love a grand day out - less than 40 minute ride on the District line from central London, followed by a short walk.

The history of the Empire via a royal garden

This book provides a detailed account of the history of Kew gardens. Nurtured throughout their history by key members of the royal family, as well as by key individuals like Sir Joseph Banks, Kew gardens reflect the development of the Empire. The exotic plants in the gardens come from all parts of the Empire, and beyond. The book is beautifully illustrated with modern and historic images, but I did find it wasn't always clear which picture was refered to in the caption.
The text itself is quite meaty compared to other coffee table format garden books, detailing the history of Kew as well as the current collection, and the future directions, making this book more than just a visual delight.

Gorgeous photos along with the history and stories of the development of Kew Gardens. This book presents much of the story of the development of Kew but it is the photography that really presents the glory of these lands!
