An Amazing Dylan Book
By jjpartyka@aol.com
The second volume of "Bob Dylan, Performing Artist" covers the less understood, less appreciated, but often more rewarding second part of Dylan's career. Williams convincingly argues that much of Dylan's finest work came during this period, and his writing may have you digging out your old copy of "Shot of Love" or "Empire Burlesque" (or your bootleg tapes of those 1979-80 "born again" shows) to hear what he's talking about.

Paul Williams Book of Dylan's Performances 1974-86, Enlarges on Excellence of First Book
By Howard M. Romaine
Whether Paul Williams was the first 'rock critic' to compare Dylan to Bach and Picasso, I'm not sure, as there are dozens of such books in print. However, his song by song, and lyric by lyric analysis is what's known in the literary criticism field as 'close reading,' and is certainly worth the time and effort to review, especially, if one is convinced, as I am, that Dylan was the most influential LITERARY figure of the post WW II generation, combining the invention of rock, with the power and suggestiveness of serious poetry, the interaction with such events as the mass civil rights movement, anti-Vietnam war movement, and the resistance to the Nixonian "silent" and "subversive" "majority junta. It was no accident, in my view, as Presbyterians like to say, that Dylan came to Nashville to call for calm with his appearance on his friend Johnny Cash's CBS show as the Nixon era dawned, as part of the process of expanding his connection to the Nashville roots of his Blonde on Blonde rock album to his take on country. Although Williams focus is more on comparing Dylan to competing innovators like the Rolling Stones or Beatles, in this second book of his extended look at Dylan's works, his attention sometimes, to me, misses the socio-political forest for the performance nuance trees. So, when he starts this book with Bob Dylan and the Band performing 40 concerts in 43 days in January and February of 1974, he fails to suggest at least part of the motivation perhaps was "patriotic," but does say, "in early 1974, Dylan's 1965 lyric "even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked" provoked great audience reaction, (one can hear it on the records of the concerts) but for Williams even though the "performances that resulted are not among the best of his career," ..."they represent his rediscovery and reassertion of himself as a performing artist." Dylan as 'performing artist' is simp;y Paul Williams mantra and it is a useful tool of analysis, but perhaps out of deference to Dylan de-emphasizing the notion of 'politics' or youth leader, Williams focus is comparative performance efforts and personal goals. However, it one takes politics in its broadest meaning, and considers the regular performance of "Hollis Brown," on these shows, along with Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower," and his "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," (written during the height of war deaths) it is almost inescapable to this listener that Dylan was also triumphantly celebrating the angst, anger and opposition of 'our generation,' to the civil rights repressions and bad wars of the era. Tragically, Williams died on March 27, 2013, just two years to the date in which the Cash/Dylan Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit opens in Nashville for a two year run, during which one can be sure, many musical, social and political views of the era will be discussed in detail.

Personal and universal
By Eugene J. Casey
If you love Paul Williams and if you love Dylan this is an unbeatable experience, focusing as it does on what some might call "lost years" of highs and lows of Bob's career. It is all the same for Paul Williams who takes it ALL in and lovingly dissects every speck of Dylan's output. Paul Williams was a lone voice in the wilderness back in the "Dylan: What Happened" days so this serves as an extension of that important book.
