About the Author
Chris Welch is among the UK's best known music journalists. After a long and distinguished career on Melody Maker, he became editor of Metal Hammer magazine, and also edited Rock World. He has known Yes for longer than any other rock writer, watched them perform on almost 50 occasions, traveled with them on tour and interviewed every member of the band many times. He conducted a series of new interviews for this book and also spoke to former Yes managers and ancillary Yes personnel.

Close to Extremis
By Robert Jackson
I share the reservations about this most that most reviewers have recorded. I was very disappointed with it because I read it after only discovering Yes a couple of years prior and learned very little I didn't know from reading liner notes and websites. It's really only worth 2 stars for at least trying to cover their whole history, but I'll give it three because nothing else comes close. It's bad that he focuses so much on interview statements rather than crafting a narrative. Welch is only good at writing magazine articles and this book just lacks depth. For example, there's one section where he starts talking about the financial situation of the band at the end of the 70's and it's fascinating - for a good 2 pages! If only he could maintain the story of the band rather than bouncing around from one interview comment to the next. Do we really need every band member to tell us, in turn, that "Finally" is in 7/4 time?

The one area where this book is interesting is in its constant focus on the tensions within the band. I think this is more a product of Welch's sensationalist, journalistic approach to his subject matter - but it's still interesting to know that tensions were so high throughout much of their touring that each member checked into different hotel. Not due to the personal acrimony of the band members, but (Welch assures us) because their WIVES were fighting with each other too much. He presents Yes as a kind of intense vortex that talented people get sucked into and spat out of - except Squire and Wakeman, who are each very tall (Welch keeps reminding us), therefore they can mosey around, be lazy buggers and do as they please.

So I'm not really sure what to say. If you want something that functions as a band biography, this is really all that is out there (except for, to some extent, The Extraordinary World of Yes). It's too short, it lacks narrative, says next to nothing about the MUSIC (except that Finally is in 7/4 time - remember that, now) and gives a kind of quirky view of the band as living in a constant state of extremis. It gives you a few neat facts - far too few - but doesn't even begin to explore the mystique of this band; the force that made them such a unique band with such fervent adherents (but, for some reason, nothing remotely touching the sales of Tull, ELP or Genesis - each of which have sold about twice as many records!) No, trying to come to grips with the enigma of Yesmusic and the band's strange charm (which is what makes people buy a book like this one) will NOT be helped by Welch.

CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!!
By J. C. House
I can't put this book down! Yes, I'm a Yes fan, but I've read other bios of bands that I love that didn't grab me the way that this one does. Chris Welch was there through most of it, and through his writing and band interviews you feel that you're getting a first-hand re-telling of every event. Terrific insight album by album. It reads like a great Stephen King novel - gripping. (Look for the updated re-release in September!)

Close to the edge...meh
By A Customer
this is a great story about yes. its full of alot of details and it can be intersting at one pont and then funny at another. the problem i have with this book is that chris welch, the author, didnt write this book so good. its hard to understand it because there are barely any commas so you have to keep reading lines twice in this book a lot. I do suggest this book though for the story although it mighht be hard to understand at some times.
