Despite all the good info, a big part of this book is the excellent month by month guide to when and what to plant, which makes life much easier your first year with a polytunnel. HOWEVER...buyer beware: I live in the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado. Our climate is so vastly different overall that I can't even just push things back a few months. It just won't work, no matter what. We have more hours of daylight here in late fall and early spring than you would find in the UK's more northerly latitudes. It is colder in the winter for much longer (this book refers to 32 degrees F as "really cold" HA!) And our summers are much hotter. It's like a different planet here. So if you live in the UK go for it. If you are in a truly harsh climate, there are some good tidbits, but not worth the price of the book. Might be good for folks in the coastal Northwest or central Atlantic areas.

Oh god, not another picture book about a picturesque corner of London, especially over-hyped Covent Garden. Then it leapt right back up. How wrong I was. Very rapidly I became absolutely absorbed. Now I am recommending it effusively to anyone who will listen. This is not only a fascinating book, it is an act of photographic salvage and a very valuable historic record. Design Week What is remarkable about his photographs is that the routine acts of life - the shouting, the smoking, the errands and conversations of the market traders and their customers - are revealed as being full of grace, drama, humour and surprise, as though the Covent Garden street market were a stage and its occupants all actors, orators and dancers. Times The beautiful collection of 300 photos is stunning just on a visual level, but it also celebrates the tight-knit community of Covent Garden, and stands as an archive of a vibrant part of London's history. About the Author
Clive Boursnell is a renowned photographer of architecture, gardens, landscapes and, above all, people. He turned to photography as the culmination of a career which included classical ballet and working as a woodsman, a farmhand, a miner and prospector and a mountaineer. He lives in London. London has been the main character in the work of Peter Ackroyd ever since his first novel, The Great Fire of London. His Hawksmoor won the Whitbread and the Guardian Fiction Prize, Chatterton was shortlisted for the Booker, London: the Biography won the South Bank Show Annual Award for Literature. A great book for lovers of London

This is a fantastic book if you are a history buff and have been to London. It is a full size hardcover book filled with photos of the last years that this site operated as a true market for the City of London. I learned a lot about the barrows, the buyers and sellers, and other interesting characters who lived out their lives working the market and bringing in the produce that went from Covent to all over the city. The little side stories throughout are rare pieces of human experience that would be lost without this telling. The author, who was the photographer, spent many hours in all weather conditions to capture these stories. I have read some great biographies of London but none with the caliber and number of photographs this book contains. I recommend this to anyone with a nostalgia for the old days that we just missed and for all the other days far back in the past.

This book is a comprehensive volume with songs in Scottish, Irish, and Manx Gaelic as well as Cornish, Welsh, and English.

Fundamental to serious study of British and Irish folk song

Peter Kennedy's Folksongs of Britain and Ireland, published in 1975, is perhaps the major single work on British and Irish folk song to be compiled in the 20th century. It includes over three hundred traditional songs from all parts of Britain, in English, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish, Manx, and Channel Islands French, with meticulous scholarly notes on printed and recorded sources. All songs are given as simple monadic musical scores, with all lyrics in English or, in the case of other languages, in the original language with English translations. The Celtic language traditions songs are particularly valuable, since most of them are extremely difficult to find elsewhere. Originally the book was accompanied by a series of recordings on tape cassette and LP of most of the songs issued by Folktracks, Caedmon, and Topix records; most unfortunately -- I in fact would say, outrageously -- most of these recordings seem to be no longer available commercially, though some at this writing are listed as available from Folktrax (note the change in spelling) records. I noted though that many of the songs in the book's last chapter, Songs of the Travelling People, are included in the anthology CD Songs of the Travelling People in versions for the most part closely similar to those given in the book.

The book itself is hard to find used and often is in poor condition and outrageously priced if you can find it. (In addition to the original 1975 hardbound edition, there was at least one subsequent paperback edition which may be cheaper, but I haven't seen it and can't confirm whether it's an exact reproduction of the original.) In all honesty, I would call the virtual disappearance of these materials from the market an indictment of how corrupt our culture has become.

There apparently was some controversy over how Peter Kennedy handled the rights to these materials, which I don't think is relevant to a review, but I believe some record of it may be found on various web sites dealing with British folklore.

This book must count as a specialist and advanced work, and the typical folk music fan or even performer probably wouldn't make much use of it. But if you have a special interest in the British and Irish folk song tradition, are already fairly familiar with the more readily available relevant printed and recorded materials, and want to get deeper into the subject, this is the first thing you should buy, and you will find that getting your own copy is worth the time and expense.

About the Author
Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in 1941 he began to devote every spare moment he had to researching and compiling the original seven Pictorial Guides. He described these as his 'love letters' to the Lakeland Fells and at the end of the first, The Eastern Fells, he wrote about what the mountains had come to mean to him: "I suppose it might be said, to add impressiveness to the whole thing, that this book has been twenty years in the making, for it is so long, and more, since I first came from a smoky mill-town (forgive me, Blackburn!) and beheld, from Orrest Head, a scene of great beauty, a fascinating paradise, Lakeland's mountains and trees and water. That was the first time I had looked upon beauty, or imagined it, even. Afterwards I went often, whenever I could, and always my eyes were lifted to the hills. I was to find then, and it has been so ever since, a spiritual and physical satisfaction in climbing mountains - and a tranquil mind upon reaching their summits, as though I had escaped from the disappointments and unkindnesses of life and emerged above them into a new world, a better world. In due course I came to live within sight of the hills, and I was well content. If I could not be climbing, I was happy to sit idly and dream of them, serenely. Then came a restlessness and the feeling that it was not enough to take their gifts and do nothing in return. I must dedicate something of myself, the best part of me, to them. I started to write about them, and to draw pictures of them. Doing these things, I found they were still giving and I still receiving, for a great pleasure filled me when I was so engaged - I had found a new way of escape to them and from all else less worth while. Thus it comes about that I have written this book. Not for material gain, welcome though that would be (you see I have not escaped entirely!); not for the benefit of my contemporaries, though if it brings them also to the hills I shall be well pleased; certainly not for posterity, about which I can work up no enthusiasm at all. No, this book has been written, carefully and with infinite patience, for my own pleasure and because it has seemed to bring the hills to my own fireside. If it has merit, it is because the hills have merit." A. Wainwright died in 1991 at the age of 84.

Coast to Coast Walk - Review

Let me start with something interesting about this book.

I, based in Singapore, ordered this book from amazon.com in the US as I couldn't find a copy of this book in Singapore. Wainwright was English. The book was couriered from the US, went to Germany, Dubai, Bangkok and finally reached Singapore. When I open the book it says "Printed and bound in Singapore!" Welcome to the world of globalization.

And about the book - It is a literary classic!

It is such a unique book; anyone who plans to do a Coast to Coast walk (in fact any one who loves walking) should read this book. There is a section about Wainwright's comments about walking, the various routes in UK, the good and the bad. Very candid and I tend to agree with most of it. Nothing like getting direct advice from the father of long distance walks!

The handwritten style, is unique, though some times cause excessive eye strain. Read a page, take a break, and then read another...

Though originally written in the 1970's it has been updated to reflect the changes landscapes go through. New villages and roads have come up. Old walkways have disappeared. Looks like all these changes are updated in the book. Having said that I am yet to do the Coast to Coast walk - so I am never sure.

A final piece....

I have learned one thing the hard way. If you are based in Asia, check prices of books and DVD's (especially originating from UK) at both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. The UK Amazon in many cases seems to be much cheaper - sometimes up to 50% off. One reason could be due to the decline of UK Pounds. The other one is probably because goods tend to be cheaper in "home markets". After comparison of prices, all my new orders of DVD's and Books on Coast to Coast walk has gone to amazon.co.uk and I have saved a lot of Singapore dollars!

Hiking guide as art

This beautiful guide to England's Coast to Coast walk is a rare thing... a very practical and reasonably up to date guide by the man who originated the route together with the original drawings and maps Wainright did to accompany the original edition. It is a beautiful book. The photoreproductions of Wainright's original handprinting give the book the feel of an historical artifact; a work of art from a different era.

Good book, but text is ridiculously small

The content in this book is terrific. Unfortunately, the text is ridiculously small. I cannot conceive of why. If the text were a reasonable size, I would have given the book a 5-star rating.
