The new Spearhead series is designed to look at the cutting edge of war, dealing with units capable of operating completely independently in the forefront of battle. Each volume in the series examines the chosen unit's origins and history, its organisation and order of battle, its battle history theatre by theatre, its insignia and its markings. Also covered are biographies of the most important commanders of each unit. Each title ends with an assessment of unit effectiveness - as seen by the unit itself, by its opponents and the light of more recent historical research. The books also include a detailed reference section with a critical bibliography, a listing of relevant museums and web sites, information about re-enactment groups and memorials. Formed in North Africa in August 1942 from the 5th Leichte Division, the 21st Panzer Division fought in all the major battles of the desert war, including the Afrika Korps' advance to El-Alamcin, the fighting retreat to Tunisia, and operations against the American forces at Kasserine, until it was destroyed around Tunis in 1943. It was again completely annihilated in the battle of the Falaise Gap. Again reformed 21st Panzer would end its days on the Eastern front, where it surrendered to the Russians at Cottbus; southeast of Berlin, in April 1945. This varied and chequered history involves some of the fiercest fighting of World War 2 and makes 21st Panzer the ideal subject to start Ian Allan Publishing's Spearhead series.

A competent but brief Summary of the 21st Panzer Division in Africa
By Dave Schranck
The Spearhead Series by Ian Allan Publishing is a Osprey Campaign "knock off" having the same dimensions and page count. The 21st Panzer Division, published in 2001, is the first in the series. For being handicapped by having only 96 pages, I thought Mr Ellis did a good job though its obvious that he had to skimp at times to fit what he wanted in those 96 pages. The book is about the 21st PzD, the heart of the DAK but since the division took part in most of the action from early 1941 to mid 1943, the reader will also have a decent overview of the North African campaign as well.
In the first chapter, "Origins", the pre history of the war in the Med in regards to the British and the Italians is given. The defeat of the French in 1940 is also prominent. After France fell, Hitler had little interest in Africa while plans for Barbarossa were moving forward but when the British started going on the offensive with O'Connor in the lead and defeating the Italians in a series of battles, Hitler had to send Rommel and what would be the DAK to Tripoli to turn things around.
The 21st PzD had a complicated birth for it started out as an under strength Motorized Div called the 5th Light Division. With both sides escalating the war, it was decided to make the 5th a full fledge division by the addition the 5th Panzer Regiment of 3rd PzD to it among other additions. By August of 1941, it was renamed the 21st PzD and for much of its stay in Africa acquitted itself well until the surrender of the entire Axis forces in May 1943. In early 1944 the 21st PzD would be reconstituted and sent to Normandy near Caen but would meet its demise at Falaise. A third reincarnation was made of the division and sent to the eastern front where it surrendered to the Russians at Cottbus, southeast of Berlin in 1945. This book will predominately cover the African campaign with just a brief mention of the two other sectors.
The author devotes 53 pages to the battle action and includes the following campaigns:
The initial run by Rommel from Sirte through Libya into Egypt in March / April 1941.
Operation Battleaxe: The British offensive to push Rommel from Egypt and to relieve Tobruk. It failed and Wavell was relieved. (June 1941)
Operation Crusader: The British second attempt to relieve Tobruk. (Nov 1941)
The British Defense at Gazala. (May 1942)
Special coverage of the "Cauldron" during the battle on the Gazala line. (June 1942)
The battle at Alam Halfa. (July 1942)
Alamein (Oct 1942)
Kasserine Pass (Nov 1942)
The final German counter attack on the Kasserine Pass. (Feb 1943)
After the Kasserine Pass, the coverage of the ending was very brief.
The increasing strength of the British 8th Army is explained but the British side is very brief and the US participation is almost non existent. The author devotes two pages to the Normandy coverage an a paragraph to the Cottbus sector.
The author does provide organizational charts for the different incarnations which clearly showed the differences of each. The chapter called "People" is a listing of all the commanders of the 21st PzD from 1941 to 1945. There were 13 officers and a brief profile of each was provided which I enjoyed.
Included with the narrative are eleven black and white maps explaining the above campaigns. The maps were 1/3 page in size and were pretty good and were helpful. There are also many photos, some of which were color. There were many shots of Mk IIIs, other vehicles, field guns and MGs.
The author closes with a Bibliography of secondary books and websites if further study is desired.
This was an enjoyable read for a lot was learned about the 21st PzD and the coverage of the campaigns, while not comprehensive, was still decent. This would be a good primer for a new student or a casual reader.

Very good
By Ronald V. Whitaker
This is probably the best book on a single Panzer Division I have. I am particularly interested in knowing the actions in which they take part but also details that show the makeup of a division at various intervals during the war, primarily how many Panzers there are and of what type. I am also interested in feeling as though I was part of the division in advance/retreat. Although following its destruction in North Africa, there is only a summary of the remaining activity, this book, though by no means perfect comes closer than most to what I am looking for.
