It happened "Just So"!

My favorite of the "Just So Stories" explains how the Cat, the "wildest of the wild animals" came to share the home and hearth of Man. Of course, the Cat resisted the Magic which the Woman made to enslave the Dog, the Horse, and the Cow. He tricked the Woman into accepting him on his own terms. And to this day, he walks by himself, by his wild lone, waving his wild tail. And all places are alike to him. I've read Kipling's classic a bazillion times in the past 45 years, and this is easily the most beautiful rendition of it I've ever seen. The large type and attractive font make reading easy for children -- and delightful for adults! The illustrations are simply exquisite! The "Just So Stories" have withstood the test of time -- more than a century -- and political correctness But I beg to differ with Kipling's contention that "three proper Men out of five will always throw things at a Cat." *Real* proper men love cats!

Not True to the Original

If you have read the original story by Rudyard Kipling you will probabaly be disappointed, as I was, in this very different version. What makes Kipling's version special is his beautiful use of words, the rhythm of his sentences, and the overall crafting of a fine story. All that is gone here. This is like the Reader's Digest version. Please read the original story and see if you agree.

The CAT is the last animal, and it refuses to fall for the perceived enslavement. Then the woman has to become creative and entice the Cat to join the family.

Atum, the creator, brings forth Shu, the god of air, and Tefnut, the goddess of dew and rain, who are the tempestuous parents of stubborn and inseparable children Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky. When Geb and Nut's carrying on halts Atum's creation of the rest of the world ("If you stay so close to each other, there will be no room for tall trees and rugged mountains, for rivers and waterfalls..."), Atum must assert his authority to divide the siblings into the earth and sky we recognize today. Daly's stylized, willowy figures shine against elegant backgrounds of rich, jewel-like blues and greens, bathed in sun-, moon- or starlight. Gr 3-5-The creator, Atum, magically brings to life the god of air and goddess of dew and rain, but the closeness of their two children, Geb and Nut, stops him from creating the world and preventing "the dark, watery wastes from returning." When he insists the two be separated, Geb becomes the earth (his volcanic anger spewing forth) and Nut becomes the starry sky. Thoth, the god of wisdom, takes pity on Nut, allowing her to have children in the five light days granted to her, and Osiris, Horus, Set, Isis, and Nephthys are born. The well-documented text is uplifted by the illustrations in their use of color and design. The depiction of the blue lotus that closes and sinks below the water's surface as a sacred element is particularly effective. Consistent with Egyptian mythology, the art suggests an incestuous relationship between the brother and sister. Beautiful work!

This book is a great introduction to creation myths of Ancient Egypt. It presents the creation according to the Heliopolitan Cosmogony, which is one of many creation explanations from Ancient Egypt. I love this book. My son and I read it together at night and we look up into the starry vault of heaven, knowing we are looking at the belly of Nut, as we stand upon her husband Geb.

My daugther and I love this book, she is very into the sky and celestial bodies. We read this book every night, it is beautifully drawn. It is a wonderful mythology to read. You learn about Atum, Geb, Shu, Nut. In general if you are going to read Ancient Eygpt Myths to your children this is a wonderful book to start with!

How Deep Is Your Love For The Beach Boys?

This is not a typical biography. This book will deal with mostly music made after Pet Sounds and will either pique your interest on them, or go right over your head. If you have most or all the records post Pet Sounds, and love them and Brian Wilson!, then this is a must have book. Paul Williams goes into the asthetics of listening to their music. Where as most average fans listen with a superficial ear to the early hits and instantly relate to the all-American sounds, and sometimes are quick to pass on music made after Pet Sounds. He helps you make the transition from surf, cars, girls, to Siley Smile/Wild Honey, Friends/20+20. From Good Vibrations to Wind Chimes. There is more to this great home turf band than just the early hits and he helps you into that new territory. For those who already are in the know and are happily in the new territory, Paul Williams echoes your feelings. I found myself agreeing, with pleasure, on his accounts of listenings to certain records. The effects and nuances of the music. To my knowledge there is no other book that covers this aspect of the Beach Boys, and to me that is the main fabric of this band. How you feel when you listen is important to Brian Wilson when he songwrites, (as he states in many interviews). Paul W. deftly tells us what comes to his mind and encourages us on HOW to listen. His thoughts were always right on about the music, and in some ways brought my already deep appriciation for the music to a deeper understanding. Paul Williams writes from one fan to another. Like a friend relaying to you his accounts of all that he was fortunate enough to experience when all this music was brand new! A reviewer of many groups of the sixties, yet addicted to the positive music that just keeps coming from the beautiful well of Brian Wilson, the legendary SMiLE accetates, live shows, and to me, his precious thoughts on the records themselves. His was one of the ears who heard what was to be the original release of SMiLE. Includes a great interview with Brian at a later date, and a conversation with David Anderle, record producer. A fresh take from a fresh voice. Nothing redundant. A breathe of fresh air from all the rehashed bios. A must have for any rabid Beach Boys fan. Essential. I have read all the books about Brian Wilson and the band, including out of print biographies. I would say this book is in my top 3 favorite books.

Rambling but passionate

I came to the conclusion one day that I didn't really care to read reviews about music (or anything) anymore because opinion's are subjective and I can't even agree with my friends half the time. So when I got this book in the mail I was kinda disappointed that it really was just a series of rambling reviews and diatribes. I love Brian Wilson and love to have books about him but this book taught me nothing I didn't already know from reading C.D. liner notes and Timothy White's book. If you want the guts on 'Smile' get 'Look!Listen!Vibrate!....' by Priore. The only real connection I made here was with William's review of the Good Vibrations box set. It was astounding to find someone get off on exactly the same bits of songs that I do. Williams definitely finds the music to be an almost religious experience like I do. Oh, and his 90s inreview with Brian is cool. Get it out of the library but buy something else. NO PICTURES!

Loving blather

In a series of reviews and annoyingly rambling interviews, Paul Williams sets out to excuse just about everything Brian Wilson ever did. Still, one can't help but be drawn in by the man's enthusiasm, and his reviews of the recent "Good Vibrations" box set and the "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" CD are perceptive.

The Breviary of Queen Isabella of Castile is one of the most splendid of Flemish illuminated manuscripts, notable for the verve and originality of its miniatures. This is the first time it has been the subject of a substantial separate publication, providing comprehensive coverage of its contents and decoration. The manuscript was presented to Isabella by Francisco de Rojas, apparently to mark the occasion of the double marriage of her son and daughter to the children of Maximilian, King of the Romans, and his first wife, Mary of Burgundy. De Rojas had acted for Isabella and her husband, King Ferdinand of Aragon, throughout the marriage negotiations, which were concluded in 1495. Isabella had a strong interest in Flemish art and this sumptuous devotional book must have been much to her taste. Breviaries, normally produced for the use of the clergy, are much less common than books of hours. They contain a larger and more varied body of texts, affording their artists a wider range of subject matter and extensive decorative opportunities. In the case of the Isabella Breviary, no effort was spared to produce an illustrative scheme on a grand scale. Two outstanding workshops of the day are represented. The greater part of the manuscript is due to the Master of the Dresden Prayerbook, whose contribution includes a number of unusual Old Testament subjects. Many of the illustrations of saints are by the Master of James IV of Scotland. In addition there are four magnificent miniatures closely related to (and possibly in the hand of) Gerard David.
