Delightful and Timely

The Santa Claus Murder is a carefully thought out plot, which takes place in mid-thirties England. I liked the fact that each chapter was 'told' by a different character in the book. Th e analysis of the murder at the end of the book clarified any remaining questions as to who committed the crime. Excellent read at Christmas.

A Clever Little Christmas Mystery

This book was written during the Golden Age of crime writing. It was published in the 30's and the time frame of the book is that time too. Ms. Hays has written three novels that have been all re-released like this one was. The setting or the book is an English country manor and includes a family with its share of disagreements and distrust. All family members are gathered at the familial home for Christmas. And of course things don't go well and a murder is committed. All of the family have equally viable motives because there is a lot of money involved and of course they all want to ensure that the master's young secretary doesn't get any. The book is clever because of the way Ms. Hay has the clues unfold. She uses different points of view from each of the family members to help lay out how it all happened. This is a wonderful little Christmas mystery that I enjoyed reading, especially at this time of year. I love the Golden Age style of writing and the book didn't disappoint.

Maybe a notch below the Agatha Christie/Dorothy Sayers class but a worthy story.

I'll add my approval here of this mystery tale. The other did a very good job. There a plenty of characters, both sympathetic and unsympathetic, and more traces of honest, praiseworthy emotion and empathy in some of them than is usual in British mysteries of this type in which the useless drones of the British upper classes tend to merely sneer at one another and the lesser beings upon whom they depend. Sir Osmond Melbury, the corpse in the case, is however, in the traditional mold of being unlikeable enough to be unmissed by most of the other characters once removed from the scene. The various movements and thoughts of the suspects are well portrayed by the device of having several of them each write their own accounts. The main detective (the more intelligent of the two brought into the case) also writes his own account which provides a balance to the others. The identity of the killer came as a surprise to me at the end although it was perfectly logical. The killer's unmasking was a tragedy for one of the more attractive characters in the story and this added a bittersweet taste to the ending. A nice touch by the author.

indeed, glorious colour!

Kaffe Fassett has done it again.The master of color has 17 wonderful projects for knitting as well as needlepoint and you just can't help but be inspired by this book. The yarns used in this great rainbow of projects are Rowan's, but you can substitute other yarns and achieve your own effects - make it to match your sofa or perhaps your love's green eyes.

The photography is by Steve Lovi, who lovingly captures all the nuances and subtle colors in Mr Fassett's work. (Mr Lovi has worked on other books with Mr Fassett.) The "Persian Poppy Waistcoat" is terrific, the "stars and diamonds" seiries of sweaters have to be seen to be believed and the needlepoint is out of this world amazing. The instructions are concise and clear.

This is not a book for a beginning knitter, but if you're looking to jump start your knitting, maybe make a truly glorious sweater for yourself or a loved one, this book is the place to start. I recommend this book highly.

I love everything Kaffe Fassett does. I discovered him in the late 80's just by the fact his knitting book spoke to me when I saw it on the shelf in the book store. In 1997 I was lucky enough to take a quilting class with him and Liza Prior Lucy. I love his compositions and his use of color.whether in painting, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, or fabric design..
