About the Author
Kevin Kiernan is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Kentucky, and author of Beowulf and the Beowulf Manuscript and The Thorkelin Transcripts of Beowulf. Ionut Emil Iacob is Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Georgia Southern University and has contributed to a large number of publications on image-based electronic editions of manuscripts.

A disappointment. But you'll buy it anyway.

Here is the executive summary: the price is very, very good. If you are an undergraduate with interest in the manuscript, it's fine. If you want to show your class pretty pictures of the MS and check MS readings, then it's fine. It has the added bonus of coming with a digital library of handy sources useful for study of the manuscript. But it will not work on your Mac, you cannot use the images for serious manuscript study, and it gives one next to no help for studying the other four texts located in the same codex.
1. Usability: Not for Macs. I'm disappointed that they even claimed that this was Mac compatible, as this CD has failed to work on every Mac I've tried it on. The scrolling and selection buttons go haywire after about a minute of use, and it becomes nearly impossible to select anything on the navigation screen. I've tried everything I can think of to resolve the issue, including running Firefox in their "safe" mode, and I cannot fix the bug. I would be very interested to hear what other Mac users have experienced.
On a PC, it more or less runs well, except it goes a little slowly. Installing the program on your PC may improve performance.
2. Imaging: For the so-called "Nowell" portion of the codex at least, these images are not large enough to see anything except the text, and if that's what you need, then it's fine. But the image sizes are a disappointing 1127'×'1461, as best I can tell, for the non-Beowulf pages and just 2140'×'2832 for those in "Beowulf." Moreover, the resampling is down so low that the images just fuzz out if you zoom in too terribly far.
The makers of the program seem to realize this. As best as I can tell, some, but not all, images seem to have been enhanced. A couple folios in the "Wonders of the East," for instance, look like they've been sharpened considerably. The result is that you can still read words very clearly-- but if you want to do things like see individual pen-strokes, marginal notes, damage, or erasures, you can't see a thing, and that lack of digital retouching consistency from page to page makes comparing color difference and wear on leaves difficult.
3. Scholarly usefulness: This is the electronic"Beowulf" only. If all you want to study is "Beowulf," this CD-ROM gives you most of the tools you'll need, including sources very hard to get like the Thorkelin transcriptions. If you're interested in anything else, you're on your own. The "Beowulf" section contains an edition of the text and has embedded notes on individual words and manuscript features; there is nothing of the sort for the rest of the MS. Add in the fact that the other texts are scanned at a much lower image size, and you're in for a world of frustration.
What it all really comes down to is this: this program was first developed in 1999. Since then, digital imaging technology and text encoding have made incredible leaps. Despite this, the British Library seems to have made only minimal changes to the code, enough to make it run in modern web browsers but not without bugs. And the images show their age. It's a trade-off: color images of the "Beowulf" manuscript are now cheap enough that even a student can now get hold of them, and that is a huge service. But you will only get what you pay for.

Good, but falls short

This program lets you examine every page of the Beowulf manuscript. "Helle" or "healle"? See for yourself. That's excellent, and if that's what you need, the program is worth it. However, there's a lot of corruption in the manuscript. Scribal errors, fire damage, crumbling paper. Never fear. Kiernan allows you to click on the damaged or missing words. Many of them, for example, were copied down by 18th and 19th century readers before they were lost. Here you can see what the words should be. In addition, there is a checkbox that you can click if you want mouseover translations, grammar, meter or popup glossary box (with links to each use of the word in the manuscript). Documentation included and also available on the website.
Now the bad. The mouseover functions don't work in Chrome. IE and Firefox only. CD load times are reasonable, but for faster loads you can install the program onto your hard drive. It still requires a browser to run. And apparently the CD is not complete. *The installation program you need is hidden on the website. This is a good program if you need to look at the actual manuscript. Most students do not need to do this frequently. One or more good transcriptions, translations or critical commentaries in book form (I suggest Mitchell/Robinson or Jack, Liuzza, and Orchard respectively) are more helpful to the average high school, college or graduate student. This program offers one possible translation (sometimes inexplicably differing from all others), no notes on grammar idiosyncracies and no critical commentary (besides what word is what). You need to mouseover to see the translation. There's no way to just read it in Modern English alongside a transcription, for example. The glossary is helpful to find other uses of words but does not find repeated formulas (phrases).
The program is somewhat buggy, occasionally refusing to conform to the page setup I want, i.e. it won't stay in single-screen or split-screen mode.
In summary, for seeing each page of the original manuscript, and Thorkelin transcriptions: A+. As a translation: B- (it's at least word-for-word with synonyms given and no "artistic interpretation"). As software: D (It's not 2002 anymore). For critical commentary: INCOMPLETE. Spend your money on books if you don't need the manuscript in electronic form.

Installing to your hard drive

If Beowulf is important to you, you will undoubtedly purchase this superb way of accessing the original manuscript in image form. Taken with ultraviolet light and fiber-optics the images allow you to view every page of the original manuscript. Or, you can read using tool-tips to show word definitions and grammar. Or show an interlinear translation. Or seemingly endless other ways of accessing the text, historical emendations and the glossary. *** Note that a new procedure is used for full installation. At the website for Electronic Beowulf you will see numerous options in a menu running down the left side of the page. Go to the bottom of the menu to "Getting Started" and click it. At the Getting Started page again go to the very bottom of the menu and there's a new choice: "Optional Installer." If you're going to use the program on a single computer you can click on the Installer option and choose to download either the Windows or Mac installation file. When you run it the entire program will be installed to your hard drive for quicker access. My thanks go to Professor Emil Iacob who not only did the masterful programming for the interactive DVD but told me about the change in installation procedure. >> So now you can proceed to a new level of access to Beowulf: images of the entire original manuscript right on your own computer!!
