Everything you wanted to know about The Boys...and then some

This book is chock full of essential and not so essential minutae on the careers,lives,films,you-name-it of the worlds greatest film comedy duo of all time,Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
That it is entitled an "encyclopedia" is no idle boast.There isn't too much that I can find that Mr.Mitchell didn't include.All is in alphabetical order and every topic you can think of from individual films,actors directly and indirectly associated with the Boys,explanations of for example reciprocal destruction,authors of other books,et al,are included in this unique volume.
At the end of each defined topic are cross references to other topics associated in some way with the one you just read which leads you hopping from one place to another.If you're not sure exactly what it is you're looking for you are eventually sure to run into something related to your field of interest as each topic is not exactly specific in nature such as "doors" or "locations" or "trains".
This is a book you don't read from cover to cover because it is like an encyclopedia but tons more fun!It's also full of illustrations and photos.
One entertaining and essential book on Laurel and Hardy that I recommend you add to your collection.

Leave 'em laughing

Having recently acquired the Hal Roach L&H films on DVD, I've found this an excellent companion volume, particularly valuable for its entries on miscellaneous topics to do with the boys. One highlight was learning that Edgar Kennedy lets out a four-letter expletive in "The Perfect Day," not noticed by the censors or anyone else for decades. While this well-written book provides up-to-date technical information about the releases and formats of the individual films over the years, I would've liked more critical analysis. A minor disappointment is that no photos date from the classic Roach years.

I've been a L&H fan since I was 6 and still am. The "boys" have been making us laugh in television re-runs, video and DVD but die hard fans are probably wondering what was the story behind the merriment? Here we have a GOLD MINE of trivia, facts and much more. Included are biographies of the pickle faced Jimmy Finlayson, Leo McCarey (who directed many of the later films) re-occuring themes, "the wives" music like "The Cuckoos" even comments on props like the bowler hats that Stan and Ollie wore. So sit back, relax and enjoy the world of two of the most talented comedians to grace the silver screen.

One such heretical sect was the Nizaris, a mystical order of warriors founded by a Persian named Hassan Bin Sabah, later known in the West as the Assassins. Hassan inspired fanatical loyalty in his followers and Assassin cultists were unafraid of capture and death. According to tales brought back to Europe by Marco Polo in 1295, the Old Man of the Mountains fed his followers with hashish before taking them to a secluded garden where they were indulged with forbidden pleasures - principally, the sexual favors of young women. On returning to normal consciousness, the Assassin was told he had experienced the heavenly garden of Paradise and would spend all eternity there, provided he lived in the service of the cult. Assassin cultists would therefore infiltrate enemy courts and army camps, reputedly remaining incognito for years, ready to commit murder upon their master's signal. It was the birth of strategic terrorism.

In modern times the legend of the Assassins carries a more symbolic significance. Some intellectuals have drawn a parallel between Hassan Bin Sabah's maxim, "Nothing is true - everything is permissible", describing the dream-trance of the hashish eater, and the 1950s concept of "brainwashing": the belief in turning soldiers into sleeping assassins. Most chilling, however, is the Islamic fundamentalist belief in martyrdom through assassination. A heady and compelling mixture of fact and fiction -- sheds light on the present by looking into our dark past

For as long as I can remember, I've always thought that the word "assassin" was derived from the Arabic and meant "the eaters of hashish." Reading this book simultaneously made me feel assured and uncertain of how true that actually is. Having read a couple books by Gavin Baddeley before (or at least ones he co-authored), I basically knew what I was in for in terms of pop culture references. What I wasn't expecting was how effortlessly wove through different subjects that were all tangentially related to the titular Assassins. He runs the gamut from history and mythology (or, unverified history) to conspiracy fiction and occultism, all while remaining compellingly readable. I suppose one of the central questions is how much modern-day terrorists may have been influenced by this heretical, medieval Islamic sect and again, the answer is quite complicated. I really wouldn't want to spoil any of the juicy details, for that would ruin the pleasure of reading this for yourself, but I will say that, though rather unorthodox by historical standards, it did help me understand world history from a different perspective. It might not be the most cohesive of books, at least organizationally, but I can guarantee that this is a book you won't want to put down until it's finished.

Everything You Need To Know About Selecting Potatoes To Grow

This is a great reference book for those who want to grow potatoes and aren't sure which varieties to grow.

The Potato Book wasn't exactly what I thought I was buying. It doesn't spell out all the how-to's of growing potatoes in detail, but it's a great list, with pictures, of some of the best selections of potatoes to buy and grow. It was excellently written.

As far as potato-growing instructions, I didn't find extensive (or even basic) instructions for new gardeners on how to grow potatoes. According to the book we are able to just toss the seed tuber into some sort of growing medium and it grows. Well, that's about all that's needed.

I tried growing potatoes in a potato bag I found at Amazon and it worked, so I guess detailed instructions aren't really necessary, but this book is especially good for people who just want to know which varieties are available and the characteristics of each. Some probably aren't available here in the United States though, since it mainly applies to gardeners in the UK and EU. The pictures are beautiful, if a picture of a potato can be beautiful. :)

If I lived in the U.K. this might be a handy start. Charts of potato varieties are inaccurate and almost none of what we grow in the U.S. nor is available to us. Totally useless for on how to grow as well. try the The vegetable gardener's bible if you want some good sound information on growing and varieties.
