This book is especially useful for those whose dolls are odd sizes as it demonstrates which measurements are critical when developing the design and cutting the material. There are hundreds of line drawings and several graphed patterns; hints on embellishing plain items; instructions on nightclothes, uniforms, national costumes and accessories. One quibble is that the book is basically for sewers, not knitters or crocheters. It is a bit old-fashioned, ideal for doll hospitals or collectors of older dolls.

Charleston, formerly Keeper of the Department of Ceramics & Glass, in the Victoria & Albert Museum writes a foreword for the text. Johnathan Matcham started his career as an apprentice wood and metal engraver. Later as a printing craft technologist he was involved in the development of rotary photogravure. He has since expanded his interest in glass, engraving mainly by the diamond point and flexible drive. Peter Dreiser served his trade apprenticeship at the Rheinbach School of Glass. He is a freelance glass engraver, specializing in copper wheel engraving, intaglio and relief work. He was awarded a Crafts Council Bursary in 1977 to tour the glass centres of Europe. He has undertaken many important commissions, and his work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert and other British museums.

This is about the best glass engraving book I have. Although most of the techniques seem to be aimed at the experienced engraver, it has some excellent information & techniques for the hobbyist & is generally very interesting & useful. It has some good ideas for home-built equipment & an excellent, comprehensive bibilography. It also has a list of manufacturers & suppliers of glass engraving equipment that is quite useful . All round, an excellent addition to a glass engravers library, or for anyone with an interest in glass & galssware.

It happened "Just So"!

My favorite of the "Just So Stories" explains how the Cat, the "wildest of the wild animals" came to share the home and hearth of Man. Of course, the Cat resisted the Magic which the Woman made to enslave the Dog, the Horse, and the Cow. He tricked the Woman into accepting him on his own terms. And to this day, he walks by himself, by his wild lone, waving his wild tail. And all places are alike to him. I've read Kipling's classic a bazillion times in the past 45 years, and this is easily the most beautiful rendition of it I've ever seen. The large type and attractive font make reading easy for children -- and delightful for adults! The illustrations are simply exquisite! The "Just So Stories" have withstood the test of time -- more than a century -- and political correctness But I beg to differ with Kipling's contention that "three proper Men out of five will always throw things at a Cat." *Real* proper men love cats!

Not True to the Original

If you have read the original story by Rudyard Kipling you will probabaly be disappointed, as I was, in this very different version. What makes Kipling's version special is his beautiful use of words, the rhythm of his sentences, and the overall crafting of a fine story. All that is gone here. This is like the Reader's Digest version. Please read the original story and see if you agree.

This is a classic folk tale which tells about the domestication of animals. One after one, from cow to cat, the animals become friendly to humans. The CAT is the last animal, and it refuses to fall for the perceived enslavement. Then the woman has to become creative and entice the Cat to join the family.

Hofmeyr and Daly, previously partnered for The Stone: A Persian Legend of the Magi, again join forces to weave a colorful picture book from one of the world's oldest storytelling traditions. Key figures in Egyptian mythology spring to life in Hofmeyr's vivid narration: the bud of a lotus flower breaks through the surface of water, and, "as the petals slowly unfurled, they spread a blue luster in the darkness. Enclosed in the center of the bloom was the golden godchild Atum." Atum, the creator, brings forth Shu, the god of air, and Tefnut, the goddess of dew and rain, who are the tempestuous parents of stubborn and inseparable children Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky. When Geb and Nut's carrying on halts Atum's creation of the rest of the world ("If you stay so close to each other, there will be no room for tall trees and rugged mountains, for rivers and waterfalls..."), Atum must assert his authority to divide the siblings into the earth and sky we recognize today. Daly's stylized, willowy figures shine against elegant backgrounds of rich, jewel-like blues and greens, bathed in sun-, moon- or starlight. The paintings go far in visually bridging slight gaps in Hofmeyr's narrative. Even with such gaps, the author's lustrous imagery and poetic tone give this ancient story a fresh feel with much appeal. Ages 4-up.

Gr 3-5-The creator, Atum, magically brings to life the god of air and goddess of dew and rain, but the closeness of their two children, Geb and Nut, stops him from creating the world and preventing "the dark, watery wastes from returning." When he insists the two be separated, Geb becomes the earth (his volcanic anger spewing forth) and Nut becomes the starry sky. Thoth, the god of wisdom, takes pity on Nut, allowing her to have children in the five light days granted to her, and Osiris, Horus, Set, Isis, and Nephthys are born. The well-documented text is uplifted by the illustrations in their use of color and design. The depiction of the blue lotus that closes and sinks below the water's surface as a sacred element is particularly effective. Consistent with Egyptian mythology, the art suggests an incestuous relationship between the brother and sister. "The Star-Bearer: A Creation Myth from Ancient Egypt," by Dianne Hofmeyr and Jude Daly, is a visually stunning book. The text tells the story of the ancient deities of Egypt: Atum, the creator; Shu, the god of air; Nut, the goddess of the sky; and others. The text is accompanied by colorful, elegant illustrations that capture an epic feel. This is a good book for parents and teachers who are interested in introducing children to the creation myths of different cultures.

Beautiful work!

This book is a great introduction to creation myths of Ancient Egypt. It presents the creation according to the Heliopolitan Cosmogony, which is one of many creation explanations from Ancient Egypt. I love this book. My son and I read it together at night and we look up into the starry vault of heaven, knowing we are looking at the belly of Nut, as we stand upon her husband Geb.

My daugther and I love this book, she is very into the sky and celestial bodies. We read this book every night, it is beautifully drawn. It is a wonderful mythology to read. You learn about Atum, Geb, Shu, Nut. In general if you are going to read Ancient Eygpt Myths to your children this is a wonderful book to start with!
