Easy to read study of an illuminated manuscript

The scope of this book is best described by the chapter titles: 1) Lindisfarne and Saint Cuthbert 2) The men who made the manuscript 3) The text of the Gospels 4) The script 5) How the manuscript was made 6) The great decorated pages 7) The smaller initials 8) Some comparisons (with contemporary works) 9) The later history of the manuscript
The text is lively, including, for example, an old riddle describing the wax table used for sketches. The Anglo-Saxom instruments used in illuminations are shown in a photograph; you aren't expected to have detailed knowledge of medieval tools. The color plates of the Gospels are magnificant. The art shown for comparison includes not only other manuscripts but metalwork etc.
This book is not only an introduction to the Lindisfarne Gospels but is a good starting point for illuminated manuscripts in general.

a great buy

I cannot praise the Lindisfarne Gospels enough, although by that I mean the actual Lindisfarne Gospels, which in my opinion contain the greatest illustrations and insular majuscule script of any manuscript. Janet Backhouse's book has enough large, color photographs and details of the script to make it a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in medieval illustration and calligraphy. Get it for your friend who thinks that the Book of Kells is the only illuminated manuscript.

It's nice selection for a good price

This little introduction to the Lindisfarne gospels has clearly written essays and a nice selection of the carpet pages and illuminations. I don't know if the reproductions are true to life as I've never seen the Lindisfarne gospels but they are attractive and suitable for a book with such a low price. I would recommend this little guide if you are interested in insular manuscripts and want an introduction to the Lindisfarne gospels. Only one strange thing--the Book of Kells is never mentioned in the essays and I would think it would be, since they are such related works.

Grossman, a Polish Jew, was forced into the Lodz ghetto at its inception in May 1940. For the next four years, until the ghetto was destroyed, Grossman used his privileges as a photographer for the ghetto administration to covertly take thousands of pictures documenting life in the ghetto. The 17 photographs on these pages show the suffering so copiously described by historians and survivorsAsoldiers march through emptied streets; freighted with bundles and rucksacks, heavily dressed people head toward what is surely deportation; a solitary child clutches a wire fence. They are heartbreaking. But even more wrenching are the photos of less iconic scenes. Readers see a team of workers smiling as they bake Passover matzoh and teenagers laughing at some delicious joke. Unfortunately, Smith, a rabbi and a photographer, is not content to let the photos speak for themselves, and he scripts a brief narrative, delivered as if by Grossman. It is numbingly formulaic ("My own pain does not matter. I must show what the Nazis are doing to my people. My pictures will tell the real story, even if I die"), and although he explains how the photographs survived despite Grossman's death, nowhere does he comment on how he arrived at his text, for instance, if the names he assigns some figures are real. For all his piety, his commentary underserves Grossman's work. Ages 8-up. (Apr.)

Grade 3-6-This remarkable photo-essay about the Lodz Ghetto in Poland poignantly introduces Holocaust horrors. Grossman was a prisoner there for more than four years, and while his "job" was to take photographs for work permits, he secretly used his camera to record the daily lives of his fellow Jewish residents. The text, written as though Grossman himself were explaining how he took the pictures and commenting on the emotions of his subjects, is simple and lets each picture speak for itself. This technique works well and makes the subject accessible to children. The 17 haunting images are not graphic or physically gruesome, but they do show young boys harnessed to carts, men lining up for bread, and families saying horrible good-byes through chain-link fences. They also show people relaxing on the grass, smiling, and singing-a testament to the undying spirit of some prisoners. As these are personal, secret photographs and not the propaganda pictures so often repeated in history books, their significance is great and they are historically fascinating. The incredible story of how the photos have survived is recounted in an appended note. A truly powerful book.

With a camera hidden under his raincoat, Grossman secretly photographed life in the Lodz ghetto in Poland. He distributed some of the prints and hid the negatives in the walls of his room. He died on a forced march in Germany in 1945, but his close friend saved some of the photos, which are now in a museum exhibit in Israel. Sixteen of his stirring full-page, black-and-white photos are included here, with brief text contributed by Frank Dabba Smith opposite each photo. There are crowd scenes of people being forced into the ghetto as well as sudden closeups of individuals--the shocked child in the cover photo; the boy sharing food with his little sister. A fine introduction talks about the pictures' "nervous, heroic, agitated" quality and discusses whether art can come from such suffering. What doesn't work here is Smith's commentary, a fictionalized first-person narrative, presumably in Grossman's voice. Grossman's life story, relegated to an afterword, is the real drama, the facts of the artist as secret witness. Hazel Rochman

A must for schools

Tha little boy on the cover of the book is my brother, Moishele Minski. Standing behind him is my mother, Nacha Minska. They perished in the Nazi gas chambers. I was there in Lodz ghetto. A grim visual reminder but very weak text...

Mendel Grossman did humanity a great service in risking his life to bring the world visual proof of the horrific tragedies within the Lodz ghetto during the holocaust. Unfortunately the text of this book is written in such an over-simplified style that the publisher's targeted age range; 3rd thorough 5th graders are easily bored by it.
Aside from a few weak descriptions of these powerful images, I felt besieged by Frank Smith's one-sided listing of war facts. Smith's prose melodramatically recites the war's background from a narrow perspective that seems designed to inflame young readers about the suffering of only one race. With so many other races alongside the Jewish people targeted for Nazi genocide, I felt that a more sober and complete narrative about this tragic time in history would have provide the book with the necessary facts to place it among the best of it's genre.
My Secret Camera deprives its readers of a powerful chance to merge the photography of this Jewish ghetto and a first-hand historical account of this terrible time in history. After reading and owning so many incredible and moving Jewish and non-Jewish authored books about the holocaust, I can only recommend you purchase this book for it's pictures - it's not worth reading.

My Secret Camera By: Frank Dubba Smith gives the reader a great insight on how Jews were dehumanized by {...] army. The reader gets a true feel for how tragic it is when someone is treated with little or no respect at all by all of the graphic and detailed pictures in this book. One of these pictures is one that has two young boys hauling an enormous bowl packed full of filthy clothes worn for months or weeks with no wash.

The pictures in this book were amazingly detailed considering the circumstances the photographer was placed in. I thought that the epilogue gave a great story about the way the pictures actually came to be published. My secret Camera may possibly be the best book I've ever read on this specific subject, Nazi terrorism. This book was terrific!

I really enjoyed reading My Secret Camera but I would only recommend it to children or even adults that have little or no feel for how badly some people were/are treated in a few places around the world. This book would really "wakes up the reader" to how terrible people can be even in today's societies. This book had phenomenal wording, terrific and detailed pictures which gives the whole book a great overall summary. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars for all of the reasons above. READ IT TODAY! The book with easy-going text and varied photographs takes one beyond Laura Ashley the brand to the husband-and-wife team of Laura and Bernard who were also business partners. From their marriage in 1949 to Laura's accidental death in their showcase home in 1985, the path of their success in business and complementary talents playing into this come to be seen.

What strikes one most is the rhythm of fortuitousness, seizing upon opportunities such incidents afforded, timely fundamental business decisions, and enlightened public relations on the road to the Laura Ashley brand's phenomenal success; while all along the road, the company kept its basic aesthetic sense intact. The company's sensibility and standards "remained firmly rooted in the Victorian era" throughout the brand's somewhat meandering path to the top. This reference remained constant in spite of nods to rock celebrities and occasions of showiness and glamour; which were advertising and public relations gambits, not signals of a changed direction. Though Victorian in its sources, Laura Ashley was fresh, not retro or stodgy, in its image, designs, and products.

In getting behind the brand, one sees also the essential role played by Bernard. "Bernard was the colourist and to him colours were like language...The color palette, for which they were to become famous...." Bernard also made some fundamental early decisions concerning production facilities which put Laura Ashley on a firm footing by which to pursue the opportunities that arose. Besides contributing ideas for designs and new products, Laura was largely the public face of the company to the fashion- and interior decoration-worlds and the media.

Laura Ashley got its start by bringing to the London fashion market the small colorful scarves which were attracting attention from being worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie Roman Holiday. The Ashleys got the idea from seeing young women wearing them while on vacation in Italy is 1953. The scarves "proved to be an ideal product" for the printing equipment Bernard had set up. The supply Bernard had talked a department store buyer into buying sold out in two hours--and the company had all of a sudden gotten a name for itself.

Loved the background info on the textile designs and dyeing. I didn't know the history of this family business, and really enjoyed learning the back story, the ups and downs, the involvement of the children. Appreciate the brand much more now.

An exceptionally well-written life story

Jane Austen's 'Outlandish Cousin': The Life and Letters of Eliza de Feuillide by Austen biographer Deirdre Le Faye is the informative and engaging story of Eliza de Feuillide, a grand woman who is best known to history as the strong-willed first cousin of Jane Austin. Eliza's international life, her time in the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, her marriage to a French aristocrat, her sudden widowhood when the guillotine claimed her husband in 1794, and much, much more are covered in depth in this fascinating, aptly researched, and exceptionally well-written life story which is enhanced with excerpts drawn from Eliza's elegantly written correspondence. Jane Austen's 'Outlandish Cousin' is especially recommended reading for students and scholars of Jane Austen and 18th Century French history.

Welcome, but would be improved by more in-depth research

Like other Jane Austen enthusiasts, I've been fascinated by the contrast between Jane's life and that of her lively first cousin and sister-in-law Eliza de Feuillide. However, I've known little about Eliza other than that her mother Philadelphia adventurously sailed to India in the mid 18th century to snag a husband--whom she later abandoned to live the high life in England while her husband slaved to support her in India. That Eliza was probably the illegitimate daughter of Warren Hastings. That Eliza married a French count for his money, and--after the count was guillotined during the Reign of Terror--married Jane's brother Henry Austen, who was 10 years younger than Eliza.

Jane Austen's Outlandish Cousin demonstrates that many of these "facts" are false or commonly misrepresented. Author Deirdre Le Faye shows that Philadelphia's marriage to Tysoe Hancock may well have been arranged by her uncle before she sailed. It was not uncommon for husbands and wives to be apart for long periods when the husband had to work abroad. Philadelphia lived in India with her husband for some years. The whole family returned to England when Tysoe Hancock believed he had accumulated enough money to retire. After several years, the Hancocks ran low on cash and Tysoe Hancock returned to India with the hope of earning enough to rejoin his wife soon. Once he realized this hope was unlikely to be fulfilled, Philadelphia offered to join him. He refused because he believed Eliza would get a much better education in England, and because his chronic ill-health led him to fear he would die before the end of their 6-month+ voyage, leaving them friendless in a country that was now strange to them. The slander regarding Warren Hastings was spread by one enemy of Philadelphia's, and Tysoe Hancock's letters indicate that he firmly regarded Eliza as his daughter and was very concerned that she have the best possible upbringing. Eliza's adult interaction with Hastings shows a distant, formal business relationship with him as a co-trustee of her capital and the former executor of her father's estate.

Unfortunately, aside from refuting gossip commonly spread by modern Austenites, Le Faye does not dig deep into Eliza de Feuillide's life. This book is merely an annotated edition of Eliza's surviving letters to her cousin Philadelphia Walter, plus extracts from some of her father's and from a handful of letters by other relations. Almost all the letters predate Eliza's second marriage. Most of them consist of about 50 percent apologies for not writing earlier and effusive professions of affection. Nor did I get as good a sense of Eliza's character as I wished. Her letters are elegantly phrased, stylish, even formal compositions sent at rather long intervals. Le Faye does not supplement them with much information about Eliza other than clarifying dates and names mentioned. Nor does she attempt much analysis of Eliza's character, life, or anything else.

My many remaining questions include: How was the Count not a count? Since he moved in French court circles, if his claim was completely invalid how did he get away with calling himself one? He was not wealthy, although he had the prospect of becoming so after receiving 5,000 acres of marshland from Louis XVI on condition that he drain it and convert it to agriculture. This was however a very expensive project. Le Faye says Philadelphia's will revealed she had given the Count all her capital, and the French Wikipedia says the Count used Eliza's dowry for the project, but nowhere does Le Faye mention the dowry. What was their marital relationship? Eliza's pointing out (early on) its prudential advantages smack of defense against accusations of an imprudent love match. Here again the French Wikipedia is helpful; the Count was regarded as "the handsomest man of his time." How much money did Eliza have to live on? The Count's property was confiscated by the French government when he was guillotined, and Henry Austen was unable to get any of it back. Eliza did have the $10,000 trust set up for her by Warren Hastings, and no one (including the Count, who tried) could touch the capital without the permission of her trustees. Some of Eliza's letters complain that she is short of cash; did she marry Henry Austen partly for prudential reasons? What disease did Eliza die of?

It's true that Eliza was not famous in her day. But she did know a great many people, some of them in French and English court circles, and she had a huge number of relations. Didn't the Count write any letters? Or any of Eliza's French in-laws? Or any of her aristocratic friends on either side of the Channel? Or her beaux? Or her cousins other than Philadelphia Walter? Are there any public or private records of Eliza's finances? Apparently Le Faye did not even look for any of this information.

And I have one original speculation regarding the $10,000 trust set up for Eliza as a "gift" from Warren Hastings, which might be clarified by examining financial records. I suspect it was merely a mechanism Tysoe Hancock set up to secure part of his estate from his creditors. Hancock was a chronically inept businessman, and judging from defensive remarks by Philadelphia Hancock, there seem to have been accusations of dishonesty. (Hancock had been managing thousands of pounds of capital for two widows, most of which they never got back from his estate, and one of them plagued Philadelphia about it.) Hancock died owing more money to his creditors than he had on hand. Presumably his wife and daughter inherited nothing, because the numerous creditors were never paid in full. It took years for Hancock's executor Warren Hastings to sort out all the creditors' claims and if there had been anything left, Philadelphia would probably not have received it till after all the creditors were dealt with. The $10,000 trust was set up soon before Hancock died, when he presumably knew he was both fatally ill and deeply in debt. It completely bypassed Hancock's will--his wife could use the income before the estate was settled. Furthermore, since the money (at least in theory) all came from Hastings, not Hancock, and since the terms of the trust made it legally impossible for any third party to get at the capital, the trust was fully insulated from Hancock's creditors. In other words, perhaps Hancock scraped up the $10,000 whose interest would enable his wife and daughter to get by after his death, and got Warren Hastings to agree to protect it and to control the estate's financial records. Just a thought.

In conclusion, Jane Austen's Outlandish Cousin is a welcome addition to the many Austen-related books, but it's a pity the author did not focus on writing a biography as opposed to annotating a small selection of letters.

The letters of a great author

This is an excellent book, well written, researched and laid out. It includes all the surviving letters of Jane Austen's cousin, Eliza de Feuillide and so is able to give a comprehensive portrait of her. She comes across as intelligent, humane, witty, and highly educated and literate. The letters are beautifully composed. Ms le Faye does not commentate herself too much but lets the letters speak for themselves. It makes an excellent companion to the novels of Jane Austen and should be read by all readers of Jane Austen.

The only drawback to the book is that the author only speaks of Eliza de Feuillide as an "influence" on Jane Austen (whatever that means) whereas in fact Eliza de Feuillide was the author of the novels of Jane Austen. I provide conclusive evidence for this in my book "Jane Austen - a New Revelation". Eliza could not publish under her own name as she was the secret illegitimate daughter of Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India. Deirdre le Faye denies Warren Hastings's paternity in this book but she is in a minority of Jane Austen biographers in this respect. She does not provide any evidence against Warren Hastings's paternity.

After reading this book, one's overwhelming feeling is of sadness that all the other letters of Eliza de Feuillide were destroyed by the Austen family in the nineteenth century to conceal the true author's identity. In so doing, they probably deprived the world of a literary inheritance almost as great as the novels themselves.

A good overall guide for the Allgemeine-SS (General SS)

This soft back edition makes for a good quick reference guide as to the large "overblown" organization. It covers the origins and history but also gives the reader nice examples of uniforms & insignia. The majority of the book covers the organization of the SS, specially the Allgemeine - SS or General SS. Sections include: Conditions of service; uniforms; insignia, forging together the police force (SD, the Gestapo, the Orpo, SiPo and the RSHA); the racial concept; the relationship of the SS with education, the economy, and public life in Nazi Germany.

The weakest section is Chapter 12 on the Waffen-SS or Armed SS. It seems to be more of an afterthought. The space allowed its history is very minor and brief. It would have been better to either leave this section out or written an expanded separate work. In the end, the volume is comparable to Chris McNab's recent book: "SS DATABOOK: 1923-45", published in 2009 by Amber Books, Ltd. Although, this book does not have the handy charts and graphs like McNab's volume. Quick reference guides are popular these days, but Mr. Lumsden deserves credit for writing one of the earliest that still holds up well, overall.

Footnote: Almost all of the information put forth in the soft back volume herein is covered in Mr. Lumsden's other book, "Himmler's Black Order 1923-45", published by The History Press in 2005. If you buy one, there is no need to purchase the other, even though the book, "Himmler's Black Order" is somewhat expanded. Further, "Himmler's Black Order", has a clear error in the book when it states that in the closing days of the Berlin fighting, the Waffen-SS troops were under the overall command of SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS, Felix Steiner. In fact they were under the overall command of SS-Brigadeführer, Wilhelm Mohnke. Steiner never made it to Berlin. His refusal to counter-attack the Soviet Army (that outnumbered his forces 10 to 1) resulted in one of Hitler's most infamous outbursts.

Helpfull in finding the fakes beaware READ READ READ as much as you can.

I have been doing this for about 8 years but there are a lot of ripoffs out . So for the last 2 years I have read as much as I can get my hands on . But it seem there's a lot that the hard core collector will not let you know the real trick in a fake. I understand you have to pay the price before you get to run with the big dogs but each day its gets harder and harder because ever body is out to make a buck . What I buy stays with me when i was 8 I read THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH . Your book was was helpfull for someone looking for more info on the SCHUTZSTAFFEL I WILL SAY BEFORE YOU GO OUT AND PUT DOWN GOOD MONEY ON ANY GERMAN WW II READ AS MUCH AS YOU CAN NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOU THINK YOU KNOW THIS PERSON . I will say this is a good book to have with you when buying any S S from any one I read any thing I can get my hands on. This did help thank you

Sarah Raven, writer, cook, broadcaster and teacher, is an expert on all things to grow, cut and eat from your garden. This book very well could have gotten a "10", but I don't believe anything is perfect. There are totally awesome pictures of Marilyn, Twiggy, Madonna, Ginger and Daisy. The pictures are both casual and on-stage. There are quite a few INDESCRIBEABLY wonderful close-up face shots of Marilyn too! If you are a die-hard Manson fan, the information will be, for the most part, the same old thing- I knew everything the book said about the band- But just having all those pictures is worth it. Good book for die-hard fans!

This is a definite "must have" for any Marilyn Manson
fan. It is very informative. The photos of the band
are phenonemenal (sp?). There are a lot of stories
from the road. It also touches slightly on Rev. Manson's
ordaining into the Church of Satan (it does not go into
any of the rituals involved though) There are a lot of
pictures of the old band including the Rev. without
most of the make-up so, you get to see what he really
looks like! The book also tells what really happened
to Sarah Lee Lucas. It also has some really cool stories
from the road. Over all...it's just a really good book
to get you acquainted with Marilyn Manson

Was very informative.Had good pics and info on bands history

I felt that this book was very informative and had alot of pictures that you would not be able to get off the internet, But if you are looking for information about the band member Marilyn Manson, then this book is not for you. Alot of the pictures are of Marilyn Manson onstage. Also theres good pictures of him without his makeup so you get to see what he looks like. Not many pictures on the other band members though. If u r a great Marilyn Manson fan then you will know everything that is said in the book, but get this book if u don't know much about the bands history. Overall i felt that this book was pretty good so i scored it a six.
