Hike it than have a life time of memoeries

The pictures and narrative brought alive my recent hike of the Coast to Coast trail. The trail description was I remembered it. Written with humor and excitement about what Wainwright was expericing as he set about writting his guide. The beautiful pictures were visual remainders of not only what I had seen but remainders of the wonderful English Country side. From the Lake District fells to the dramatic and lonely dales to the Vale of Mowbray to the final few days along the Cleveland Way throught the North York Moors to the end at Robin Hoods Bay.

Read the book and view the pictures and you surely will put your boots on and set off on your own adventure of hiking the Coast to Coast Trail.

Good for high level planning or armchair travel

This is a nice book for an armchair traveler or for high level trip planning. Most of the pictures are of the scenery along the way. Only a few pictures of villages or buildings. The photos are well done. Nothing cheap about it. There is a book dealer that shares a surname with Alexander Hamilton. That is another source for something like this.

About the Author
Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in 1941 he began to devote every spare moment he had to researching and compiling the original seven Pictorial Guides.

what can one say about Wainright that hasn't been said already? Wainright guides have been the bible of Fell walkers for 50 years now and are set, with the recent revisions of his classic guides, to have that reputation reinforced for a new generation of fell walkers, coast to coasters and Pennine Way-ers. Beautiful in their presentation this Anniversary Edition is a joy to touch and read. I would also like to credit the wonderful Julia Bradbury and the Wainright Society for bringing this wonderful man and his guides to my attention.

Good guide

Had this item sent to a friend who is planning to visit the Lake District in the near future and wants to do some walks, as these are considered the 'bible' for walking in the area. They are my books and I'll be getting them back before too long. If the are as good as his 'Coast to Coast' they'll be excellent. His descriptions and drawings really make you want to get out there and do it!

The descriptions are a work of literature and the illustrations take me all the way back over the miles and the years. Hoffman (Amazing Grace) adapts eight parables for children in this intimate, thought-provoking picture book. By their nature, the story-lessons, or parables, attributed to Jesus have traditionally been among the most accessible parts of the Bible. But Hoffman steps beyond mere retellings, taking great care to explain or imagine Jesus' intent behind these "stories with two meanings" and to gently challenge readers to see both sides, especially when the lessons are, as Hoffman says, "uncomfortable." Each parable bears a simplified new title (the Prodigal Son is transformed into "The Jealous Brother"; The Good Samaritan becomes "Neighbors"), and a few plot details are slightly updated, making them more accessible to contemporary kids. The stories open with brief introductions that promote introspection and identification with the characters ("You know what it's like to feel jealous" or "Do you like parties?"). Finally, the author closes each parable with a short summation, showing how the plot works to demonstrate God's love for his people. Hoffman's friendly yet reverent voice and solid pacing are sure to captivate her audience. Morris's (The Fourth Wise Man) warm and earthy palette depicts earnest-faced people of the ancient Holy Land in a vivid landscape dotted with lush palm trees and vineyards as well as dusty roads and fields. Included are the workers in the vineyard, the prodigal son, the house on the rocks, the good Samaritan, the lost sheep, the sower and the seed, the rich man's feast, and the unforgiving servant. Each story has an enlightening introduction and an explanatory afterword to help children understand its meaning. Scriptural citations are provided along with brief notes about the retellings. Each selection is vividly illustrated in earth-toned watercolors, mostly full page, in a slightly flat but realistic manner. The figures have strong, melancholy, expressive faces. Other collected versions of these well-known parables, such as Christopher Lane's Kingdom Parables (Victor, 1994), Tomie dePaola's The Parables of Jesus (Holiday, 1987), and Patricia St. John's Stories That Jesus Told (Morehouse, 1995), are available, but this work is particularly reader-friendly and attractive.

Ages 4-8. Hoffman's collection of seven parables is a real treasure. In an intrduction, which describes Jesus as a storyteller and explains what a parable is, Hoffman frankly recalls how she felt about these stories as a child. Some she found difficult to understand; others seemed to her unfair, as though Jesus had taken the wrong side. Her purpose in presenting them, which she does beautifully, is not to have us "get the message" but, as she feels Jesus meant, to encourage us to think hard about what we do. Her straightforward retellings, without a trace of religiosity or sentimentality, capture miniature human dramas familiar to every Christian: the jealous brother, the man beaten and left for dead, the frantic shepherd who loses one of his sheep. Hoffman prefaces each story with a few of her own thoughts about the theme and presents questions to get children thinking; then she launches into the story, telling it in rich yet down-to-earth language, concluding with a few insights. The format and design of the book reflect the wonderful tellings. Reminiscent of Rouault's artwork. Morris' watercolors, some full-page and others simply bordering the text, entice children to explore this wonderful book, which can be enjoyed in groups, through sharing and discussion, or as an independent reading by an older child ready to contemplate the deep truths of Christ's words. Almost ruined by intrusive commentary

"Parables: Stories Jesus Told" features text adapted by Mary Hoffman and art by Jackie Morris. This children's book presents several of the classic parables of Jesus of Nazareth. The retold stories include the parables of the good Samaritan, the sower, the prodigal son, the unforgiving servant, and more.
The stories are retold with effective simplicity. Morris' artwork is truly wonderful; her warm, rich tones bring to life the Middle East of Jesus' era. Her human faces are full of emotion, and she is also masterful at illustrating sheep, a wheatfield, flatbreads, and other elements.
The only bad thing about this book are the preachy, hit-you-over-the-head afterwords that follow each retold parable. These stories are some of the world's great literature, and should be allowed to speak for themselves; for a children's book, they only need the accompaniment of great artwork.

Great book for fun playing.

I really enjoy this music book. Took up clarinet after a 30 year break, work every day on exercises for notes and fingering and then finish with playing quite a few of these songs for fun. A lot of them, I knew the melody but never knew the names of the songs. Fun book to play out of .

This book is basically a collection of quotes from the band Members. It's nothing new really. It's also mostly ALL Lars quotes. If you love Metallica and are a collector buy the book & judge for yourself.

Great book. Lets Metallica speak for themselves

This book is better than any biography that I have read of any group. Instead of paraphrasing thoughts for the group, it lets the group speak for itself through the bandmembers quotes they have made throughout the years (and it tells you what year the quote was from). The book contains an introduction by the editor (Metallica does the rest of the writing) and quotes from the band members made throughout the Metallica's career. The quotes are grouped on the certain topics they are talking about. I would say it is an essential for any Metallica fan

This is a great book. It's very well made. It let's Metallica speak for themselves. It's not a biography, it's a book filled with great quotes and photos from the start of their career.
